Yesterday, a coworker used the term, “terse” in a way that seemed odd for my understanding of the word and its meaning. After looking it up, I concluded that while the usage was technically correct, the comment was aimed at an irony in our workplace. Such issues are not the domain of this blog, so I will not bore you with the details. But, it did get me to think about how we can use words in new and unusual ways to communicate more than just an idea; a whole subtext of meaning that speaks to people on many levels other than the most obvious.
Using quotes, catch phrases, and poems in scrapbooking is prime example. Short phrases or poems that communicate the meaning of the moment we’re trying to capture in not only the words, but in the things we add to the pages. The pictures, the journal notes, the embellishments … these are the tools by which we try to capture the memory of the moment. To say to our loved ones in a terse, but loving way, this is what we thought important to preserve. And therein lies the irony.
