Coats of arms were were passed down through one descendant each generation. They were granted to individuals in the European nobility and changes were allowed with each passing. Genealogy Magazine, which is free, has a fairly good discourse on the use and abuse of coats of arms and crests and may be a good resource to use if you want to add a coat of arms or crest to your scrapbook.
